The domain + fear + avatar lore this week was SO GOOD like the list of things it established or de-established keeps getting longer and longer the more I think about it:
- That “mixed fear” domains exist (FEAR SOUP)
- That “mixed fear” individuals exist (I’m SURE that this extends to more than just Martin)
- That you don’t need to be an “avatar” to have a domain, just to be favored by the Eye
- That Salesa’s anti-fear bubble not only kept out the Eye, but prevented Helen from her ability to see where anyone who entered the Distortion’s corridors had been
- That “avatar” is an arbitrary term, and there’s no clear attribute that leads to it.
That last one is a huge one for me because previously the main theory was that avatars involved a choice or pledge–but then you had characters like Agnes who had been enmeshed with the fears since birth, or like Gerry where he was going around using powers related to the fears but hated them all just the same, or like Jon, Annabelle, and Oliver where they were claimed by a fear before they even knew what they were, involving no agency of their own. The “choice” that kept coming up is related to how much they embraced it.
