Can I say something? I WANT straight authors to write books about LGBT characters. Not just because they might be closeted, but because I want there to be more books with LGBT stories

#this is my problem with when ownvoices becomes about what privileged authors should and shouldnt write instead of highlighting #marginalized authors’ works #i would MUCH rather an author step out of their comfort zone to write a book abt a gay mc rather than another book abt a straight one (tags OP’s)

Also when marginalized authors HAVE to write own voices to get published instead of writing whatever book they want

i really, really, really don’t want there to be a culture shift to where a straight author is considering making a protagonist gay, but changes their mind because they don’t want to be accused of “profiting off the lgbt community” or “appropriating gay culture” or some shit, because that’s how you get more and more straight books. straight people should research the community to make up for their lack of personal knowledge, and we should judge queer books on their merit, not the author’s experiences.
