I think the art of insulting each other has been lost. No one puts any effort into it anymore. It’s all “fuck you” this, “you’re ugly/stupid/annoying” that, or even the toothless “you’re a walnut” of teenagers who can’t really make themselves be openly mean. There’s no love. No creativity. No soul behind it.

I feel like insults have fallen out of favour after we’ve seen elaborate insults become the setup for the brutal punchline of an inarticulate rebuttal. See the classic exchange:

See, that isn’t an insult, though—it’s a joke. Shiro is tacky and derivitive and pretentious and has set himself up to be the butt of a joke, but Cal isn’t saying anything actually hurtful. This is a great setup for a joke that would probably make Shiro embarrassed if he knew the exchange was screenshotted and that other people were laughing at him, but it would be cringeworthy even without Cal’s reply.
